Photo: Parks Victoria The magnificent limestone caves of Buchan are internationally renowned, their honeycombed beauty attracting visitors from right across the globe. Underground rivers cutting through the limestone rock formed the famous Buchan Caves almost 400 million years ago. After the discovery of the system by European settlers in the early 20th century they are now a popular tourist destination for thousands of visitors every year, no matter the season. Open to the public with professionally guided tours, both the Fairy and Royal caves have walkways, each offering their own unique experience - the Royal Cave has calcite-rimmed pools while in Fairy Cave you will see elaborate stalactites and stalagmites. Tours of the Royal and Fairy caves operate daily, excluding Christmas Day, their constant temperature of 17 degrees Celsius allowing comfortable tours year round. A stair-climber and motorised all-terrain wheelchair are available for those with mobility difficulties to tour through the caves and around the Caves Reserve. Complimenting the natural wonders of the caves, the Buchan Caves Reserve features well-maintained picnic and barbecue areas with facilities for both campers and day visitors, including powered and unpowered campsites. There is an abundance of wildlife in the reserve with bellbirds, lyrebirds and kangaroos just some of the friendly locals. Another accommodation option within the reserve is the unique, contemporary and comfortable safari-style tents. The concept combines the ‘close to nature’ experience of bush camping while at the same time offering some of the comforts you would expect from modern park huts or cabins. Toilet and shower facilities are close by.
