Lakes Coast Visitor Guide

PAGE 36 | LAKES COAST VISITOR GUIDE LOCH SPORT A quiet haven of pristine lakes, beaches and national parks Loch Sport is a small waterside village surrounded by Gippsland's picturesque lakes, beaches and national parks. It is uniquely situated as the only town on the southern side of the Gippsland Lakes, sitting on a spit of land between Lake Victoria and the Ninety Mile Beach. History and nature The area around Loch Sport was first occupied by the First Nations Tatungalung people, and a number of shell middens have been found nearby, along the Ninety Mile Beach. In 1841, a party led by Angus McMillan explored the lakes by boat. After the party discovered open grassland on the ocean side of Lake Victoria, the area was later taken up as pastoral runs. Wildlife Loch Sport's unique location makes it a haven for wildlife such as kangaroos, emus, wombats, possums, echidnas, and occasionally koalas and deer. Dolphins are often seen in the lake, and more than 190 species of birds have been recorded in the area. Numerous trails enable bushwalkers to immerse themselves in natural bushland, close to sea or lake. The region's Indigenous and natural heritage is acknowledged on an art trail in the Lake Street Park, which features large outdoor murals by Gippsland-based artist Simon White, depicting some of the original Tatungalung people, as well as local flora and wildlife, such as wedgetailed eagles and sea eagles.
