LAKES COAST VISITOR GUIDE | PAGE 99 ORBOST East Gippsland’s gateway to nature, history & adventure Nestled at the confluence of the Snowy and Brodribb Rivers, Orbost is the heart of East Gippsland and a haven for visitors seeking nature, history, and authentic country charm. Surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and winding rivers, this welcoming town offers an ideal base for exploring Victoria’s scenic east. Outdoor enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice. Fishing, kayaking, and river cruises along the Snowy River are popular, while the nearby Errinundra National Park and Snowy River National Park provide hiking trails that showcase spectacular waterfalls, ancient forests, and abundant wildlife. For cycling fans, the East Gippsland Rail Trail offers 96 kilometres of scenic tracks through bushland, farmland, and quaint townships. Orbost itself is full of character, with cafes, artisan shops, and local markets providing a taste of the region’s hospitality and produce. Seasonal events, from fishing competitions to art exhibitions, bring the community to life and offer visitors a chance to immerse themselves in local culture. Whether you’re chasing adventure, seeking relaxation, or exploring history, Orbost is a gateway to East Gippsland’s natural beauty and rural heritage—a destination where every turn reveals a story waiting to be discovered. The Slab Hut Although Orbost has many historical buildings, perhaps the most eye-catching building of all is a historic slab hut. Located in the town’s newly redeveloped Forest Park, the distinctive slab hut was originally built in around 1872 to house a local farming family. In 1970, the hut was moved from its original site (three kilometres from where it now stands) and stored until 1984, when the local council approved its restoration and relocation for use as a visitor information centre. It now houses lots of local tourist information, maps, books on the area, locally made goods and trinkets. It’s free to visit, and open daily from 9am to 3pm. A historic 1872 slab hut now serves as the Orbost Visitor Information Centre. Snowy River at Orbost Information correct at time of publication.
