Merimbula’s popular Fishpen Peninsula Merimbula’s Fishpen Peninsula has long been associated with holiday popularity and is so named for its interesting history. The Fishpen area was named for the local fishermen of the 1930s who netted salmon off the Merimbula beach. The fish would be ‘penned’ inside the lake, close to the causeway, before being transported to Sydney in the cool of the night. During Merimbula’s early years, locals and tourists could fish the Merimbula Lake area inside Fishpen, for a charge of a shilling for every fish caught. A viewing platform and shelter used by the fishermen to locate the fish schools remains on the north side of the lake, a historical building that can be accessed from the road prior to the Merimbula Wharf.
