TREASURES FROM THE PAST Packed to the rafters with curios from the past, the Bairnsdale Bazaar is jammed with wondrous items waiting to be rediscovered. With stalls showcasing collec- tables, antiques, man cave items, retro, bric-a-brac, and vintage treasures, experienced dealer of antiques, Richard Boletti, has brought together a concept that is popular with bargain hunters and has attracted tourists from across the globe since opening its doors in December 2015. The Bairnsdale Bazaar is the home of about 30 stalls, all individually operated by friendly staff and offering an ever-changing and amazingly wide variety of wares. The old wares are in keeping with the historic nature of the heritage listed butter factory in which they’re housed. The building itself has a rich history, as building number two of the Old Butter Factory, built in 1891 by stonemason, William Ellis. Originally inhabited by the Gunaikurnai people, the first European to settle in the area in 1842 was Frederick Jones who utilised the land at what is now known as Lucknow to breed horses for the Indian market. Archibald Macleod took up land in the area now covered by the present town, naming his run ‘Bernisdale’ after his birthplace on the Isle of Skye. Legend has it that the name was changed to its present spelling when Macleod noted the number of ‘bairns’ (children) within the settlement, though it is just as likely that it was changed to fit local pronunciation. With its favourable access to the river and the sea via the Gippsland Lakes, the town grew in the 1850s and 1860s becoming a supply port for the East Gippsland goldfields. The hops cultivated in the Mitchell Valley between 1868 and 1916 were also transported to Bairnsdale for shipment to the hop kilns. A post office was set up in 1856 and the township was surveyed and gazetted the following decade. A police station was established in 1862, followed by a school and post office in 1868 and the courthouse built 1892-1894. The decades to follow saw a variety of industries emerge including the railway from Melbourne arriving in 1888, a tannery, mining tool produc- tion, ice and butter factories, a fruit cannery and an attempt to develop an oil seed industry between 1890 and 1910. The 1920s saw immigrants from the south of Italy begin to arrive resulting in the production of vegetables as a major industry. Now Bairnsdale is an ideal central base for all sorts of holidays from the mountains to the sea.
