Lakes Coast Visitor Guide

PAGE 70 | LAKES COAST VISITOR GUIDE TWIN RIVERS Adventure awaits in Twin Rivers and beyond The Nicholson and Tambo rivers – and the townships of Nicholson, Johnsonville and Swan Reach through which they flow – are known as the Twin Rivers area. Along with being a peaceful and relaxing riverside haven, the Twin Rivers region offers plenty of options for those who like to get out and about. Activities, on and off the water, include fishing, cycling, bird watching, boating and paddling, and there are also numerous cafés, eateries and wineries for those who want to sample the area’s friendly hospitality and fresh local produce. Abundant birdlife The local rivers and billabongs provide a perfect sanctuary for birdlife, making this a popular location for bird watchers. So, be sure to grab your binoculars when you’re out driving, walking, cycling, boating or paddling, for a chance to see a vast array of birdlife, ranging from pelicans, grebes, bronze-wings, black swans, cuckoos, emus, and numerous varieties of duck and geese, through to the elusive tawny frogmouth, stilts, herons, cockatoos, parrots, egrets, the stunning azure kingfisher, and various birds of prey, including the imposing wedge-tailed eagle, to name just a few. Anywhere along the rivers or billabongs is a good starting point. A boating and fishing mecca The Twin Rivers region, makes an ideal base for boating on the Nicholson and Tambo rivers. The rivers run into the Gippsland Lakes, a short distance downstream, providing access to these vast waterways. Upstream, the rivers become narrower as they wind their way up into the hills. Boat ramps and moorings are available in Nicholson and Johnsonville. The Nicholson and Tambo rivers – and the Gippsland Lakes into which they flow – are prime fishing spots for bream, estuary perch, flathead and tailor. Walking and cycling The East Gippsland Rail Trail – which passes through the Twin Rivers town of Nicholson – offers a fun and easy way to explore the rivers and countryside. The relatively flat trail follows an old railway line for 94 kilometres from Bairnsdale to Orbost, crossing an old wooden railway bridge over the Nicholson River. Even if you don’t want to ride the full length of the trail, it’s worth stopping at Nicholson to walk or ride across the bridge, which provides wonderful views of the river and surrounding countryside.
