PAGE 70 | LAKES COAST VISITOR GUIDE BRUTHEN A quaint and leafy village by the river Bruthen – at the southern end of the Great Alpine Road – is a quaint, historic and leafy village that's well worth the stop. Perched above the Tambo River, where the mountains level out and meet the river flats, the village has ample parking for cars and caravans, as well as a lovely central green park with picnic rotunda and toilet facilities. For motorbike tourers, it is an ideal place to stretch your legs before heading up the Alpine Road, or for resting after that scenic ride. It's also a popular rest stop for cyclists enjoying the flat and easy East Gippsland Rail Trail, which passes through the town. At Bruthen, you can walk to parks, cafés, a bakery, an op shop, secondhand/vintage collections, a honey shop, brewery and a lovely art gallery. The Bruthen Heritage Precinct is located next to the Bruthen Art and Information Centre at the eastern end of Main Street. This makes for an interesting visit, with two historic huts that have displays of days gone by, with a specific focus on local transport and law enforcement. An old fettler's hut and a former police lockup have displays inspired by stories about the local Indigenous people, explorers, stock routes and the railway. They also feature tales of local crime and policing. It's also well worth dropping by the adjacent Bruthen Art and Information Centre for friendly advice and information about the Great Alpine Road and towns along the way.
