PAGE 72 | LAKES COAST VISITOR GUIDE MOUNT HOTHAM Snow, scenery and adventure at Mount Hotham Located in the pristine Alpine National Park, Mount Hotham has long been a winter destination for snow-lovers. The 1861-metre-tall peak was named by the Government botanist, Ferdinand von Mueller in 1854, in honour of the then Governor of Victoria, Sir Charles Hotham. The stunning, snow-covered landscape of this alpine region attracts skiers, snowboarders, cross-country skiers and those who just enjoy warming themselves by an open fire in a mountaintop lodge. A picturesque and invigorating environment year-round, Mount Hotham sits roughly midway between Bairnsdale and Wangaratta. It is relatively easy to access from the south in winter (through the East Gippsland region) and from Victoria's north-east, along the scenic Great Alpine Road. When driving to the alpine regions in winter, be sure to carry snow chains, and get daily weather updates. Highlights of the Mount Hotham region include the Mt Feathertop track via the Razorback cross-country trail, and the Mt Hotham to Dinner Plain snowshoe or ski trail. Maps of this region will guide you on the best starting points. And, as always, be prepared for all weather in the mountains, as conditions can change very quickly. In springtime, as the snow disappears, hikers can get amongst the snow gum woodlands, the sub-alpine heathlands and stunning grasslands.
