Among the region’s delights are award winning wineries including Tambo Wine and Nicholson River Wine. Established in 1994 by Bill and Pam Williams with a winery opening in 2005, the vines and viticulture at Tambo Wines have stabilised and now, under the direction of winemaker, Alastair Butt, the wines have become exceptional. Bill and Pam believe the primary purpose of winemaking is to capture the fruit characters that express the site and maintain the essence of this fruit character to the bottle. Their wines have been highly acclaimed. Wine critic, James Halliday, said of their 2015 Tambo Reserve Chardonnay, “A striking wine of very high quality, white peach with a twist of limey acidity, the oak extract to detail that makes it special.” “A combination of pure varietal expression and intensity of flavour permeates all Tambo wines.” A 10-minute drive away is Nicholson River Winery. Established in 1978, it is one of the oldest wineries in Gippsland and has long been renowned for its Chardonnays, being voted nine times Victoria’s most popular white wine and recently awarded a gold medal by the British Sommeliers Association for its 2014 Chardonnay. Nine grape varieties are grown on the property, crafted into small quantities of special European influenced wine styles that have distinctive regional character, are full flavoured and are good companions to the local produce and cuisine. Owner operators, Ken and Juliet Eckersley, also make a vintage sparkling wine and a rare sweet botrytis Semillon. Local cheese platters are available at the cellar door. Stop by and relax under trees as you watch the river winding through the valley below. An exciting development at the winery is the upcoming restaurant that will seat 60 or more guests. Diners will enjoy not only fine local wines and produce but also magnificent views of the Nicholson River below from the wide windows or substantial deck. Watch this space for more in 2019. Enjoy award winning wines from the Twin Rivers hillsides.
